Commissioned Artworks – A Painting Designed Just for You

Many clients are hesitant to approach an artist with their ideas for a painting. You might worry about how to communicate your vision or fear that the final piece won’t meet your expectations. This uncertainty is completely understandable, as commissioning a painting is both a financial and emotional investment. However, misunderstandings in the process often arise from a lack of clear communication between the client and the artist. That’s why I dedicate time to understanding your vision thoroughly, ensuring that both of us feel confident moving forward. The success of a commissioned artwork lies in meeting the client’s expectations, which is the foundation of the entire design process.

Extensive Experience with Commissions

Before transitioning to a full-time visual artist, I had a long career as a graphic designer in advertising agencies, working on rapidly changing projects according to client briefs. This extensive experience has taught me how to identify clients' needs and ask the right questions to keep projects on track. Even if you’re unsure of exactly what you want, don’t worry—we’ll refine your ideas together.

The Process of Commissioning a Painting

Many of my commissions start with the need for a specific style or size of artwork for a particular space. I frequently collaborate with interior designers, integrating the artwork into larger design projects.

The design process

The design process generally follows these steps:

• I receive an inquiry from an individual or designer.
• We discuss the project, and then arrange a meeting either at my studio or at the client’s location.
• During the meeting, I clarify the client’s wishes, asking various questions until I feel I fully understand the desired outcome.
• After assessing the needs, I provide a detailed quote.
• If the client is a professional designer, I usually receive a visual plan or mood board, along with specific instructions regarding the color scheme or style (e.g., for a trade show display).
• If the artwork is to be placed in a space where it plays a crucial role in the overall design, I prefer to visit the site. If that’s not possible, photos of the space can also be helpful.
• Before starting, we need to determine the desired size of the painting. A helpful tip is to outline the frame of the painting on the wall with painter’s tape to visualize the correct size. I’m happy to assist in selecting the appropriate size.
• After the needs assessment and quote, we finalize the timeline. Depending on the technique and size of the painting, a realistic completion time ranges from 3 to 12 weeks. I prefer to work with tempera and oil paints, which require longer drying times. If the painting is large, the project will take more time. Sourcing the right size canvas can take 1-2 weeks. However, if your project is urgent, let me know—I’ve managed to meet tight deadlines when needed.
• Once the painting is ready, I send photos or invite the client to view it in my studio. The work is either approved or adjusted if necessary.
• After approval, the painting is delivered to the client.

Pricing for Commissioned Artwork

The price of a commissioned artwork depends largely on its size and style. Prices start at around €400. An exception is pet portraits, which cost €185 for a 33x24 cm piece. I always provide a precise quote before proceeding with the order. Sales commissions for designers are agreed upon separately.

I want my clients to be satisfied with the artwork they commission. If the piece doesn’t meet your expectations, even after adjustments, you’re not obligated to purchase it. However, an initial cost, which covers the canvas and materials, must be paid upfront. For paintings under 100 cm, material costs range from €50 to €100, while large canvases (around 200 cm) start at about €600. Pet portraits are an exception and do not have an initial cost. Once the artwork is approved and delivered, the commission is non-refundable.

Feel free to reach out, and let’s discuss your ideas. The needs assessment does not commit you to anything.
